What a Dental Exam Covers

A dental exam at The Port Dental Clinic is far more than just checking for cavities. Our comprehensive evaluation covers your entire oral health:

Tooth-by-tooth inspection for decay, cracks, and wear

Gum health assessment — checking for signs of gum disease

Digital X-rays to detect hidden issues below the surface

Oral cancer screening — examination of soft tissues

Bite and jaw assessment — checking alignment and TMJ health

Personalized treatment plan based on our findings

Why Regular Dental Exams Matter

Catch Problems Early

Small cavities, early-stage gum disease, and other issues are far easier and cheaper to treat when caught early.

Prevent Disease

Professional cleanings paired with exams prevent gum disease — the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

Save Money

A routine exam and cleaning costs a fraction of treating advanced decay, root canals, or extractions.

Protect Overall Health

Oral health is linked to heart disease, diabetes, and other systemic conditions. Regular exams help protect your whole-body health.

Your Dental Exam at The Port Dental

A typical exam-and-cleaning appointment takes about 45-60 minutes. Here's what happens during your visit:

1

Medical History Review

We review your medical and dental history, including any medications, health changes, or concerns since your last visit.

2

Digital X-Rays

If due, we take digital X-rays to detect issues invisible to the naked eye — cavities between teeth, bone loss, impacted teeth, and infections below the gumline.

3

Professional Cleaning

Your hygienist removes plaque and tartar buildup from all tooth surfaces, flosses between teeth, and polishes for a smooth, clean finish.

4

Comprehensive Examination

Your dentist performs a thorough tooth-by-tooth inspection, checks your gums, bite alignment, jaw joints, and screens for oral cancer.

5

Discussion & Treatment Plan

We discuss our findings, answer your questions, and — if anything needs attention — create a prioritized treatment plan with clear cost estimates.

Who Should Get Regular Dental Exams?

The short answer: everyone — from children with their first teeth to seniors with complex dental histories. The Canadian Dental Association recommends exams every 6 months for most patients. However, you may benefit from more frequent checkups if you:

  • Have a history of cavities or gum disease
  • Are pregnant (hormonal changes can affect gum health)
  • Have diabetes or heart disease — conditions linked to oral health
  • Smoke or use tobacco products
  • Wear braces, dentures, or have dental implants
  • Haven't visited a dentist in over a year

At The Port Dental Clinic, we never judge — whether it's been 6 months or 6 years since your last visit, you're welcome here. Our team is gentle, patient, and experienced with anxious patients.

Dental Exam Questions

We recommend a dental exam and professional cleaning every 6 months for most patients. If you have a history of gum disease or are at higher risk for dental issues, we may recommend more frequent visits — typically every 3-4 months.
We typically schedule your cleaning and exam together for convenience. Your hygienist will perform a professional cleaning, and your dentist will conduct a comprehensive exam — all in one visit.
Not necessarily. We take X-rays based on clinical need. New patients usually need a full set, and established patients typically need bite-wing X-rays annually to check for cavities between the teeth. We never take X-rays unnecessarily.
During your exam, we visually and physically check the soft tissues of your mouth (tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, throat) for any unusual lumps, patches, or sores that could indicate precancerous or cancerous changes. Early detection is critical and significantly improves outcomes.
Yes. Dental exams are classified as basic preventive care and are typically fully covered by most dental insurance plans. The CDCP also covers exams for eligible patients. We offer direct billing so you may owe nothing out of pocket for your regular checkup.
