Why Straightening Your Teeth Matters

Orthodontics isn't just about a straighter smile — although that's certainly a welcome result. Crooked, crowded, or misaligned teeth can significantly impact your oral health. Teeth that overlap are harder to brush and floss effectively, creating pockets where plaque and bacteria accumulate, leading to increased risk of cavities and gum disease.

Bite problems (malocclusion) can cause uneven tooth wear, jaw pain, TMJ disorders, headaches, and difficulty chewing. Orthodontic treatment corrects these underlying issues while giving you a smile you can feel confident about.

At The Port Dental Clinic, we treat patients of all ages — from children as young as 7 for early assessment, to adults who want to straighten their teeth for the first time or correct shifting from past treatment. It's never too late to invest in a healthier, more aligned smile.

Orthodontic Solutions for Every Age

Traditional Metal Braces

The most tried-and-true method for correcting complex alignment and bite issues. Modern braces are smaller, more comfortable, and more efficient than ever. Ideal for severe crowding, significant bite corrections, and younger patients.

Clear Aligners (Invisalign)

Virtually invisible, removable aligners that gradually shift your teeth into position. Popular with adults and teens who want a discreet option. Eat what you want, brush normally, and smile during treatment. Learn more about Invisalign →

Early Orthodontic Assessment

The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends a first assessment by age 7. Early intervention can guide jaw growth, create space for emerging teeth, and prevent more complex (and costly) treatment later. See pediatric dentistry →

Common Orthodontic Conditions

Orthodontic treatment can correct a wide range of alignment and bite issues:

Crowding

Teeth that overlap or are pushed forward/backward due to insufficient jaw space. Makes cleaning difficult and increases cavity risk.

Spacing

Gaps between teeth that can trap food particles, affect appearance, and sometimes indicate underlying bite issues.

Overbite

Upper front teeth extend too far over the lower teeth, which can cause jaw pain, tooth wear, and gum damage.

Underbite

Lower teeth protrude past the upper teeth, affecting chewing efficiency and facial profile.

Crossbite

Some upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth when biting, causing uneven wear and jaw misalignment over time.

Open Bite

Front teeth don't touch when the mouth is closed, making biting into food difficult and affecting speech clarity.

Orthodontics — Insurance & Payment

Many dental insurance plans include orthodontic coverage, especially for children and teens under 18. Coverage typically ranges from $1,500-$5,000 as a lifetime benefit. Some plans also cover adult orthodontics. We offer direct billing and can verify your benefits during your consultation.

We also offer flexible payment plans to make orthodontic treatment accessible regardless of insurance coverage. We'll work with you to find a financial arrangement that fits your budget.

Orthodontics Questions Answered

We recommend an initial assessment by age 7 to catch developing issues early. However, orthodontic treatment is effective at any age — many of our adult patients achieve excellent results with braces or Invisalign. It's never too late to straighten your teeth.
Treatment duration varies from 6 months to 2+ years depending on the complexity of your case. Simple cases like minor crowding may be resolved in 6-12 months. More complex bite corrections typically take 18-24 months. We'll give you a realistic timeline during your consultation.
Both are effective, but each has advantages. Braces are typically better for complex cases, severe crowding, and significant bite corrections. Invisalign is ideal for mild to moderate cases, offers discretion, and allows you to eat and brush normally. We'll recommend the best option for your specific situation.
You may experience some discomfort for a few days after adjustments (braces) or when switching to a new aligner tray. This is normal — it means the treatment is working. The discomfort is typically mild and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.
