What Are Dentures?

Dentures are custom-made, removable appliances that replace missing teeth and surrounding tissue. Modern dentures are crafted from high-quality acrylic resins and, in some cases, metal frameworks that closely mimic the appearance and function of natural teeth and gums.

Missing teeth affect more than just your appearance. They can make it harder to chew food properly, cause you to mumble or slur words, and lead to facial sagging over time as the jawbone loses stimulation. Dentures address all of these concerns — restoring your ability to eat comfortably, speak clearly, and smile confidently.

At The Port Dental Clinic, we take the time to ensure your dentures fit comfortably and look natural. We customize the tooth size, shape, and colour to complement your facial features, and we provide ongoing adjustments as needed to maintain an ideal fit.

Finding the Right Dentures for You

We offer several types of dentures to match your specific needs, lifestyle, and budget.

Complete (Full) Dentures

Replace all teeth in the upper or lower jaw — or both. Custom-made to fit your gums and match your facial structure for a natural, comfortable appearance. Used when all natural teeth are missing or need to be extracted.

Partial Dentures

Replace several missing teeth while preserving and working with your remaining natural teeth. Held in place with metal clasps or precision attachments that fit around your existing teeth. Prevents remaining teeth from shifting.

Immediate Dentures

Placed on the same day your teeth are extracted so you're never without teeth. Pre-made based on measurements taken before extraction. Adjusted and relined as your gums heal and reshape over the following months.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Secured by dental implants for superior stability and comfort. No slipping, no adhesives, no dietary restrictions — the closest experience to natural teeth. Can be fixed or removable.

Benefits of Modern Dentures

Restore Your Smile — custom-crafted to match your facial features, dentures give you a natural, attractive smile you can feel confident about.

Eat Comfortably — dentures restore your chewing ability so you can enjoy a varied diet again, improving nutrition and quality of life.

Speak Clearly — well-fitting dentures restore your ability to pronounce words properly, eliminating the mumbling that missing teeth can cause.

Support Facial Structure — dentures fill out the facial profile, preventing the sunken appearance that occurs when teeth are missing long-term.

Protect Remaining Teeth — partial dentures prevent your remaining natural teeth from shifting out of position.

Affordable Solution — dentures are typically more affordable than implant-based solutions. Insurance and CDCP often cover a significant portion.

Dentures — Insurance & CDCP Coverage

Dentures are classified as a major prosthetic procedure and are typically covered at 50-80% by most dental insurance plans in Alberta. As a registered CDCP provider, eligible patients can access dentures with reduced out-of-pocket costs. We offer direct billing to most major insurers.

The cost varies based on the type of denture (partial vs. full, standard vs. implant-supported) and the materials used. We'll provide a detailed estimate and explain all your options before beginning treatment.

Dentures Questions Answered

The process typically takes 3-6 weeks from initial impressions to final fitting. Immediate dentures can be placed on the same day as extractions so you're never without teeth. We'll discuss the specific timeline for your situation during your consultation.
Modern dentures are crafted with high-quality materials that closely mimic natural teeth and gums. We customize the tooth size, shape, colour, and arrangement to match your facial features. Most people won't be able to tell you're wearing dentures.
Remove and rinse dentures after eating. Brush them daily with a soft brush and denture cleaner (not regular toothpaste, which is too abrasive). Soak them overnight in denture solution. Handle carefully over a folded towel. Continue to visit us for regular checkups even with full dentures.
There's usually an adjustment period of a few weeks where you eat soft foods. With practice and patience, you'll be able to eat most foods comfortably. Implant-supported dentures offer the strongest bite force and fewest dietary restrictions — talk to us about whether they're right for you.
With proper care, a well-made set of dentures typically lasts 5-8 years. Over time, your jawbone naturally changes shape, which means your dentures will need relining or eventual replacement to maintain a proper fit. Regular dental visits help us catch fit issues early.
