Sometimes a tooth is too damaged, decayed, or crowded to save. Our experienced team makes extractions as comfortable and stress-free as possible — with proper anaesthesia, a gentle approach, and clear aftercare guidance so you heal quickly.
A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. While we always prioritize saving a natural tooth whenever possible — through fillings, root canals, or crowns — there are situations where extraction is the safest and most effective treatment.
There are two types of extractions: simple extractions, where the tooth is visible above the gumline and can be loosened with an instrument and removed with dental forceps; and surgical extractions, needed when the tooth is broken below the gumline, impacted, or requires bone removal for access.
At The Port Dental Clinic, we perform both types of extractions with skilled precision and patient comfort as our priority. Local anaesthesia ensures you won't feel pain, and sedation options are available for anxious patients.
We always explore every option to save a tooth first. However, extraction may be the right choice in these situations:
Severe tooth decay — decay has destroyed too much tooth structure for a filling or crown to be effective.
Impacted wisdom teeth — trapped beneath the gumline, growing sideways, or pushing against adjacent teeth. Learn about wisdom teeth.
Dental overcrowding — removing a tooth to create space for orthodontic treatment or to prevent crowding of neighbouring teeth.
Advanced gum (periodontal) disease — infection has destroyed the bone and tissue supporting the tooth, causing it to loosen beyond repair.
Dental trauma — a tooth fractured below the gumline from injury or accident that cannot be restored.
Pre-implant preparation — removing a failing tooth to make way for a permanent dental implant.
We understand that the idea of having a tooth pulled can cause anxiety. That's why we take extra care to ensure you're informed, comfortable, and supported throughout the entire process.
We take digital X-rays to assess the tooth's position, root structure, and surrounding bone. This helps us plan the safest, most efficient extraction approach.
We numb the area thoroughly with local anaesthesia. You'll feel pressure but not pain. Sedation options are available for patients with dental anxiety or complex extractions.
Using specialized instruments, we carefully loosen and remove the tooth. For surgical extractions, a small incision may be made and the tooth sectioned for easier removal.
We place gauze to control bleeding, may place dissolving sutures if needed, and provide you with detailed written aftercare instructions to ensure smooth healing.
Proper aftercare is essential for a smooth recovery and to prevent complications like dry socket.
Bite on gauze for 30-45 minutes. Rest with your head elevated. Apply ice packs 20 minutes on/off to reduce swelling. Avoid straws, spitting, and hot liquids — these can dislodge the blood clot.
Eat soft foods like yogurt, smoothies, soup, and mashed potatoes. Rinse gently with warm salt water after meals. Take prescribed pain medication as directed. Swelling typically peaks and begins to subside.
Gradually return to normal foods as comfort allows. Continue gentle brushing, avoiding the extraction site directly. Most discomfort and swelling resolve within a week. Call us if pain worsens.
